The music program at Basinview Drive Community School works to connect students with Canadian musicians through in-school concerts. And when an artists is invited to the school, the students get ready! Every student gets to know about the artist, becomes familiar with their music, and their songs are sung in class. The choir prepares a special arrangement of one or two of the songs, which they then present to the artist the day of their show at the school. Recent guests include Joel Plaskett, David Myles, Meaghan Smith, Mark Bragg, Willie Stratton, Jeremy Fisher, and Keith Mullins.
Now the school is starting a new fundraising project: they’re producing a CD! Every student at the school will participate, and many of the artists who have visited the school have already agreed to lend their lead vocals and instrumentals to the songs. The sales of the CDs will help to fund a much-needed outdoor playground for the school. And thanks to the Awesome Halifax grant, these kids will be singing their way to the swing set!
